Master Gardeners teaching series runs monthly | staff | Updated: 2015-05-09 19:59:32 | The Learn to Grow in the Garden Series sponsored by the Greene County Master Gardeners will take place each month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic, Springfield.
The cost is $5 per session. It is payable in the gift shop at the botanical center.
Here is the schedule:
- May 11 - "Soil" by Kelly McGowan Learn the basics of soil: texture, organic matter, pH, nutrients and more.
- June 8 - "Milkweed" by Jean Ackley Spread milkweed far and wide for the benefit of monarch butterflies; learn how to grow it.
- July 13 - "Herbs" by Barb Emge Enjoy a history of herbs and be able to answer these questions: What do the words Old Man's Love, Bedbug, Bouncing Bet, Bread and Cheese, Knitbone have in common? Which herb was the source for the blue paint worn by the Scots in Braveheart? Which was used by the Aztecs to mellow their victims prior to sacrifice? Why were some herbs linked to witchcraft? Also, learn the significance of Shakespeare's use of over 20 herbs in his plays. A tour of the 200 herb varieties growing in the herb beds at the Master Gardeners Demonstration Gardens will be made.
- August 10 - "Garden above Ground" by Missy Sanford Learn the advantages of using raised beds in gardening and what to plant. Examples of inexpensive and expensive or elaborate raised beds will be shown.
- September 14 - "Seed Saving by Patrick Byers Be exposed to an in-depth discussion of seed saving techniques, from controlled pollination to see extraction to seed storage.
- October 5 - "Urban Bee Keeping" by Ann Kynion Hear recommendations and information to help you decide if bee keeping is right for you.
