| New MSSU professor has a unique passion | staff | | Updated: 2013-10-15 14:57:16 |  | | | Dr. Jenna Jarvis, new assistant professor of biology and environmental health at Missouri Southern State University-Joplin, shows her interest in bats, a childhood passion that allegedly started on Halloween when she wore a homemade bat costume. She continued her interest in graduate school at Texas A&M working on a degree in zoology. She laments the spread of a fungal disease attacking bats called white nose syndrome which has shown to have killed millions of bats in the northeast and steadily is moving west. She explains that bats develop the fungus that causes itching sores in hibernation, then upon awakening waste so much energy trying to find food that they die. |
