| After two years of discussion, fiber to the premise is one step closer to a reality in Nixa.
At its January 20, 2015, meeting, Nixa City Council authorized Mayor Brian Steele to sign a terms agreement with SiFi Networks, a London-based fiber provider. The terms agreement outlines the material terms relating to SiFis proposed development of a fiber-to-the-premise system throughout Nixa.
A fiber network would benefit the city in a number of ways, said Nixa Mayor Brian Steele. It will help us attract and sustain new businesses to the city as well as advance technology.
In July 2014, Nixa City Council enlisted marketing consultant Design Nine to conduct a feasibility study to determine demand for the gigabit infrastructure.
Based on the study results, Nixa residents and businesses support this endeavor, said Nixa City Administrator Brian Bingle. The city would use this revenue stream to pay SiFi for the network over the next 30 years.
SiFi would front the money to construct the network, which would have a 100 percent pass-by off all premises, and Internet service providers would lease space on the fiber system from the city.
Not only would this provide a revenue model for the city, but it would give residents and business owners provider options keeping the costs down, said Bingle.
Currently, Nixas city attorney is working with SiFis attorney to formulate an acceptable fiber optic network lease agreement, development agreement, and an easement agreement. Once these agreements are complete, they will go to Nixa City Council for consideration.
