During a recent weekly inspection of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge, pictured, the Springfield Public Works Department noticed corrosion and steel loss in the north support column of the 114-year-old bridge. The department brought in experts from Great River Engineering on February 25, 2016, to evaluate the bridge for safety. Based on recommendations the department concluded that While the bridge is not in imminent danger, it is in the best interest of the public to close it for a minimum of three months (until at least June 1, 2016) to evaluate repair options.
During the closure, engineers from Great River will also take an in-depth look at the bridges other support columns and develop a larger rehabilitation plan for the entire bridge if needed.
Built in 1902, the 562-foot footbridge allowed pedestrians to cross 13 sets of railroad tracks. Go Back |
