The 5th Annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival will take place in Springfield on August 14-16, 2015. A highlight of the event will include a gathering of Route 66 aficionados at the Old Glass Place, 501 E. St. Louis St., Springfield. They will meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 15 and 16th. While tickets for the August 14 performance of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at the Gillioz have sold out, the city is considering showing the concert on a large screen in Park Central Square Park.

After the Friday night concert featuring the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Pure Prairie League sold out so quickly, we realized that the appetite for live entertainment indicated that we needed to grow, said Geoff Steele, executive director of the Gillioz. It became clear to us very quickly that we should celebrate the regional musical offerings for this second night of Route 66. Cindy Woolf and Mark Bilyeu are Ozark treasures, and the historic Gillioz Theatre is proud to debut their new project on this festive occasion. For $20-25 tickets contact the theatre.

The Route 66 parade is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with the best viewing along St. Louis Street. For the complete parade route go here.

Author Susan Croce Kelly actually will be the one to start off the festivities with a talk from 7-8:45 p.m. on August 13 at the Library Station, 3536 N. Kansas Expy., Springfield. Kelly's titles include Father of Route 66: The Story of Cy Avery and Route 66: The Highway and Its People.

The movie Cars will be shown at a devised drive-in movie theatre beginning at 9 p.m. on August 14. Cars will park in the grassy area between the Springfield Expo Center and the Jordan Valley Car Park/Convention & Visitors Bureau off of E. St. Louis Street.

On August 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on August 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. a car and motorcycle show is planned. Registration is $20 per vehicle through August 1, $30 thereafter. For parking availability see the map here. For more information about this show go here.

Would you like to run? Experience Route 66 on foot through historic downtown Springfield. The 6.6 mile run for 10 age groups will take place from 8-10 a.m. on August 16, beginning at 635 E. St. Louis St. Register by August 15 for $32.50 per person. For more information go here.

Were excited about adding another full day of festivities to the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, says Cora Scott, director of public information and civic engagement for the city of Springfield. With the variety of activities and events, there will be something for everyone.
