Eleven people instrumental in starting the Friends of the Garden and who designed, built and maintained the first 20 gardens in Springfield's Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park were honored at the dedication of a new Founder's Garden today. They are: Major Close, Bill Roston, Bib Childress, Stan Horsch, Annette Close Pennell, Ann Wester, Dick Carson, Sam McGowan, Don Akers, Jay Garrott and Lisa McKay.
The new garden, centered with a Japanese maple tree surrounded by plantings and four boulders, is part of the Springfield Botanical Gardens "Guide by Cell" self-guided tour. Located south of the botanical center adjacent to the hosta garden, it was conceived and designed by Friends of the Garden board member Tom Lakowske.
The 112-acre Springfield Greene-County Park Board-operated park is located at 2400 S. Scenic Ave. Go Back |
