Nicole (Nikki) Shah of Springfield, pictured, was one of two Missouri students recently honored as Prudential Spirit of Community Award winners. for their outstanding acts of volunteerism. They now qualify for a trip to Washington, D.C. to be entered in the national competition.

A junior at Missouri State University's Greenwood Laboratory School, Shah helped start a non-profit organization that has raised more than $65,000 in the past two years for children and others with serious illnesses. Her organization, "Every Teen Helps Inspire Change (ETHIC) is comprised of volunteers from five high schools and two colleges in the Springfield, Missouri area.

We are proud of these students who go the extra mile to help those in need, said Missouri Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. It takes a special person to serve the community in this fashion.

Blake Harris, a student at Congress Middle School in the Park Hill School District, was the other honoree. Six other Missouri students, not in the Southwest Missouri area, received engraved bronze medallions as distinguished finalists for their service activities.
