Updated: 2015-03-06 12:18:45
The Joplin Blasters will be hosting open tryouts for the upcoming 2015 American Association season. They will take place at 9 a.m. on April 25, 2015, at Wendell Redden Stadium, 3310 W. 1st Street, Joplin.

Members of the Blasters Front Office as well as Blasters Field Manager Carlos Lezcano will be on hand to oversee the event.

Open tryouts are a unique event for this community, we could very easily find the next superstar right in our own backyard, said Blasters GM Shawn Suarez. Its a great chance for anyone who aspires to be a professional athlete to go out there and showcase their talents in front of decision makers.

Players are expected to wear proper baseball attire and will need to provide their own equipment, including wood bats, gloves, and catching gear if needed. The cost to register for the open tryout is $50 if done in advance of April 25th. Players who register on the day of the tryouts will be charged $75 to participate.

Professionals added to team

Major League pitcher Robinson Tejeda, 32, has joined the Blasters with seven years of pitching experience. His most impressive year came in 2009 as a member of the Royals where he allowed only 43 hits over 73.2 innings, while amassing a staggering 87 strikeouts. For his major league career Tejeda has pitched in 442 innings, allowing 397 hits, striking out 371 batters, with a career 4.42 era.

The Blasters also added Jorge Martinez, 31, to the starting rotation and Cuban outfielder Yasser Gomez. Martinez joins the team after a season in the Atlantic League with the York Revolution. He accumulated an 11-8 record, 3.21 era while only allowing 125 hits over 134.2 innings pitched. Gomez coming from the Camden Riversharks in the Atlantic League has a career batting average of .331 and a lifetime .407 on-base percentage. He has a decade of experience playing for the Industriales of the Cuban National League, also known as the New York Yankees of Cuba.

The Blasters are the newest member of the South Division in the American Association of Independent Baseball. They will play a 50 home game schedule beginning May 21, 2015, with game one of a four game set against their South Division rivals, the Wichita Wingnuts.
