Learning about sedums | mariwinn | Updated: 2014-09-04 11:40:27 | | | Trint Williams, a library assistant at the Library Center on S. Campbell in Springfield, lectures to a group of the Succulent Society of the Ozarks. In speaking on the subject of sedums, Williams said that the plants' crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) necessitates that they keep their stomata open at night and "hold their breath" during the day to avoid dehydration. The need for variation in temperature between day and night is a reason why the plants don't do well indoors. While during the winter they seem to disappear, it just takes a tiny portion of the plant to rejuvenate to the point of being quite invasive. However, they are easily pulled up to keep in check. |
