A three-month investigation of seven different incidents that include home invasions and residential burglaries of elderly persons led Springfield Police to serve four search warrants on the evening of February 27, 2014. One was served in Ash Grove with assistance from the Greene County Sheriffs Offices SWAT team and the other three were served in Springfield.
After being interviewed by Springfield Police Department detectives, Joseph Smiley, Hershel Marsh, and Stephen Steele, were booked into the Greene County Jail; their cases were presented to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorneys Office.
Smiley, 32, of Ash Grove, has been charged with five counts of first-degree robbery, five counts of first-degree burglary, one count of second-degree robbery, four counts of armed criminal action, and one count of second-degree burglary. His bond is set at $250,000.
Marsh, 45, of Springfield, was charged with one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary, and his bond is set at $50,000.
Steele, 20, of Springfield, has been charged with four counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of misdemeanor stealing, and two counts of theft of a firearm. His bond is set at $50,000.
The charges announced herein are merely an accusation, and Smiley, Steele, and Marsh are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Additional charges related to these cases are pending. This investigation is ongoing, and no further information is releasable at this time.
