Broadway shows come to Springfield dgallion
Updated: 2016-05-27 16:11:01
"Now, I've had the time of my life" is what audiences will be saying about the Broadway shows coming to Springfield! The 2016-2017 Broadway Season at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts has four fantastic national touring Broadway productions. They are Hollywood's holiday hit ELF: The Musical; the enchanting musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella; the unique staging of ONCE, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and the season finale with passionate romance and sensational dance, Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage.

"We have a sensational new Broadway season in store!" says Deb Gallion, director of marketing and promotions at Juanita K. Hammons Hall, Missouri State University. "Patrons in Springfield and surrounding areas have supported our Broadway series for many years - and, thanks in no small part to an extraordinary outpouring of enthusiasm for this past season's two week run of Wicked, we're moving forward with a very exciting lineup of shows that have never before played in this market. They feature great storytelling, with heart, magic, song, dance - and moments that have touched, and in some instances shaped, our lives. The 2016-2017 Broadway Season offers the opportunity to experience live theatre at its best right here at home, where we bring big Broadway to Springfield!"

The series includes:

  • November 29-December 1, 2016 - ELF: The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy's enormous size and poor toy-making abilities eventually force him to face the truth. With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic will make everyone embrace their inner Elf. The New York Times says that "Elf" is "splashy, peppy, sugar-sprinkled holiday entertainment" USA Today calls "Elf" "endearingly goofy!" Variety proclaims, "'Elf' is happy enough for families, savvy enough for city kids and plenty smart for adults!" Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, ELF features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

  • January 24-26, 2017 - Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, from the creators of The Sound of Music and South Pacific, that's delighting audiences with its contemporary take on the classic tale. This lush production features an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations and all the moments you love - the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball and more - plus some surprising new twists! Be transported back to your childhood as you rediscover some of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most beloved songs, including In My Own Little Corner, Impossible/It's Possible and Ten Minutes Ago, in this hilarious and romantic Broadway show for anyone who's ever had a wish, a dream... or a really great pair of shoes.

  • March 7-9, 2017 - Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards including Best Musical, ONCE is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who is about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights...but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, ONCE draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams and the power of music to connect us all. Once The Musical contains adult language and themes.

  • April 25-27, 2017 - Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance, and sensationally sexy dancing! This worldwide smash hit tells the well-loved story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. Featuring the hit songs Hungry Eyes", "Hey Baby", "Do You Love Me?" and the heart-stopping (I've Had) The Time of My Life, this record-breaking live theatre sensation has been seen by millions across the globe. London's Sunday Express says, "This crowd-pleasing stage adaptation hits the jackpot!" You'll have the time of your life! Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage contains adult language and themes.
