Beekeeper class is announced d-burton
Updated: 2016-03-20 14:07:18
University of Missouri's newly developed Certified Master Beekeeper program will debut from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the Southwest Research Center, 14548 Highway H in Mt. Vernon.

"Basic Beekeeping for Beginners" will focus on the principles of beekeeping, including the history of beekeeping, honeybee biology, plant and pollinator relationship, and essential equipment and requirements.

"We are excited to bring the Master Beekeeper program to southwest Missouri," said Amanda Marney, program director at the agricultural experiment station. "This high-quality program will offer both classroom instruction and hands-on opportunities for participants."

The Certified Master Beekeeper program consists of three levels: Basic Beekeeping for Beginners, Apprentice Pollinator Beekeeper and Master Beekeeper. By the end of this first course, individuals will be able to help experienced beekeepers in the management of hives.

Individuals must have one year of experience rearing bees and join a local beekeeping club before taking an exam to move up to the next level. Experienced beekeepers can test up through the program if they have five or more years of experience.

The fee for the course, for individuals 18-years-of-age and older, is $58 (includes a book). Payment by cash or check must be made before the class. To register send an e-mail to Jendel Wolfe here or to Amanda Marney here. You may also phone (417) 466-2148.
