Unattended bags found safe cerwin
Updated: 2014-12-08 15:42:59
The Springfield Fire Department Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have determined the backpack found in front of U.S. Bank at 417 St. Louis Street did not contain any hazardous materials.

A bank employee noticed the bag just before 8:30 Monday morning. The Bomb Squad responded and followed procedures to safely remove the backpack. It was taken to a remote location where it was determined to be safe. A second unattended bag found at the same location was determined to be safe at the scene.

The entire block was evacuated while bomb technicians investigated, including employees of U.S. Bank and the Discovery Center of Springfield. In general, the Springfield Fire Department Bomb Squad investigates all reports of unattended bags. However, because of the location of the bag found Monday morning, there was a heightened sense of concern.

The hazardous device located on Park Central Square Sunday evening remains under investigation at this time and is believed to be unrelated to Monday mornings incident.
